The Antiguans were at one time enslaved under sugar plantation owners who inflicted grave abuses.  In 1834 they were emancipated.  The plantation owners were sure they had met their death bell doom due to their exploitations such as burning wayward slaves and sexually degrading the women.  However, the natives choose to attend church on emancipation day and give thanks to God for their deliverance.
